1. What is an Over:

"Over" - We hear it a lot in Cricket. What is an Over?

The Bat

MY BAT...

My Preferred Brand of bat a Gray Nicolls

Gray Nicolls
Phoenix Pro-Performance

I hope to include information here to allow you to buy and look after your cricket bat so your parents can pass it onto your brother or sister or perhaps donate to a younger cricketer.

Your in the cricket shop, it is full of cricket equipment and one corner is devoted to Cricket Bats. There is all sorts of shapes and size and makers', so how do you choose a bat?

My bat as you can see the picture to the right is a Gray Nicolls Phoenix Pro Performance. It weighs 2lb 12oz - perhaps you could tell me what that is in grams or kilograms?

Is Your Bat the Right Size for you?:

Is your bat the right size for you? How do you know which size is right for you?

Size 2, Size 1, a Harrow, all the different sizes, one will be right for you.

You are in the Cricket Shop, with your mum and or dad, and there is so many bats, all different sizes and from different makers, Gray-Nicolls, Gunn & Moore and others.

How Do You Make your Decision?:

The top of the handle should come to about the bottom of your school trouser pocket - when they are round your waist not hanging on your hips!!

I hope the table on this page will assist you in making the decision on size. Please remember though it is only a guide.

SIZE OF BAT?
Metric - Metres

Excellent - Cricket Coaching Mats

Imperial - Feet and Inches

My thanks to Gray Nicolls for Bat After Care info.

 Weight?:

The weight of the bat is mainly down to you. I would suggest a bat that is not to heavy. You may pick it up in the Cricket Shop and it looks and feels fantastic, its the right size - e.g. Size 2 but it maybe too heavy?

How can you tell?
Simply pick the bat up by the handle and hold it out in front of you - horizontally. If after about 3o seconds your arms begin to ache, then the bat is probably on the heavy side and you should chose a lighter one.

approx Bat Weights for Full Size Adult Bats
Light 2lb 7oz - 2lb 9oz
Medium 2lb 9oz - 2lb 11oz
Heavy 2lb 11oz - > 3lb plus

Did you know that Kevin Pietersen's bat is about 2lb 9oz.

I would add that choosing your next cricket bat is a very personal decision and make sure you pick up several bats in the cricket shop before deciding on the one!!

Don't forget your Cricket Coach should be able to assist, but remember which ever bat you choose you will have to use it.
